Since launching his private practice in 1993, Dr. Mann has developed a reputation for excellence and creativity while helping clients to successfully navigate the complexities of international environmental, trade and investment law. As Senior International Law Advisor to the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and co-founder of its investment and sustainable development program, Howard continues to pioneer new thinking on the relationship between international investment treaties and sustainable development. He set a major international precedent by representing IISD in the first international investment arbitration to allow interventions by civil society organizations.
Over his career, Howard Mann has advised more than 70 governments on international and domestic investment law issues. His work is anchored by a commitment to achieving strong results that make a
difference in the long-term. He has published extensively and is a frequent speaker at conferences around the world.
Based in Ottawa, Canada, he is a ski, cycling, art and music enthusiast. He has devoted his energies to political participation, coaching amateur sports, university lecturing and advising local community organizations. He is the proud father of two sons.
