Based in Ottawa, Canada, Howard Mann is a leading international lawyer and consultant specializing in international investment and sustainable development. His work covers investment treaties and contracts, environmental issues, resource development, the enhancement of social and economic development, and respect for human rights. He has been in private practice since 1993.

His practice is anchored by his role as Senior International Law Advisor to the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). Through his work at IISD, Dr. Mann has pioneered new thinking on international investment agreements and advised more than 70 governments on matters of investment law and policy.

Among other accomplishments, Howard Mann's work has influenced negotiations around the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change as well as the North American Free Trade Agreement and its environmental side agreement; led to citizen participation in multiple investor-state arbitrations; and altered the structure and content of several international investment treaties.
